and thus she fell asleep…
She walked up the steps, trying to take caution to avoid the already crumbling roof. Everything in her told her to run, to hide and escape the awful site she knew she would see when she opened the top door. The fire had taken its toll, doing its job right and destroying everything in its path. She was lucky, she knew, that no one had been hurt, that Lindsey, Tom and Evie, where okay. That they hadn’t been hurt. No one had been hurt; they’d all gotten out alive. But everything had been lost. It took all her strength and courage to push open the door to her old room. At first all she saw was the dust settling over the burned out things, the grey ash lingering in the air and scratching at her throat. A cry caught in her throat as she looked in, looked at everything she’d owned burned and black, just waiting to fade to nothingness.
Taking a cautious step in, her foot landed on an ash crusted photo frame. Something inside her stirred as she bent to pick it up, knowing immediately what it was. She wanted to cry, to scream and hurt something. Of all the things to lose, it was the most important one of all. With shaking fingers she wiped away the grime and dirt and looked down at the old photo, creased down the middle from years of folding before Lindsey had finally convinced her to put it in a frame. For safe keeping she’d said. In all the years that Cora’s mum had been dead, she’s missed her, but it wasn’t until that moment she truly wanted her, wanted her mum to hug her and tell it would be okay. No one should just have a single picture of their mother, and then nearly lose it too a fire.
The ceiling creaked slightly, like it had done when someone stood in the room above and wanted to annoy her, but there was no one there now. Just her in an empty burnt out house, while her family waited outside. ‘Time to go.’ She muttered to herself standing up and looking around one last time. Her last thoughts before the rushing bricks hit her where ‘What was I even thinking, wanting my room to be green?’

The rush into the hospital was a whirlwind, with people shouting, crying, arms flailing everywhere. But yet little Evie was the calm one. Who stayed beside Cora all the way, her eyes open with a thoughtful look. When the doctor came out and told them she was in unconscious with a possible brain injury, Evie, tilted her head in thought, watching as her mum cried and brother tried to comfort her, holding back his tears as well.
“We don’t think she’ll wake up anytime soon Ms’ Blake, please prepare yourselves for the worst.” The doctor left, throwing sympathetic looks at the small broken family. What a tragedy, for one so young to face.
“It’s okay mummy, Cora’s daddy has just put her to sleep for a while. She’ll be fine again soon wont she? He wouldn’t let her die.” Evie said, her eyes wide and her head bobbing in a yes. “And she’s safer when she’s asleep, and that’s what you wanted right? For her to be safe.” she was clearly proud of her logic and thoughts on Cora’s condition, so Lindsey and Tom agreed. She was just asleep, safe from everything out to hurt her.
Oh hiya!
